Drop it like it's hot: Why I am for the SODA "BAN"

Sugar Pyramids!

I love being an American.  I love the freedom to choose whatever I want to eat, whenever I want to eat it, wherever I want to eat it.  It's awesome.

HOWEVER.

And it's a big however.  (see how I did that?)

I also know what it's like to spiral out of control with my choices.  I feel like my willpower is not a common trait.  If others willpower were as strong as mine, they could take on the daunting task of trying to lose weight and succeed and actually keep it off.  But as a personal trainer, I know this isn't so.  My job is 90% motivation ALONE.  10% the workout.  The mental game is the one most people lose when they set out to get themselves healthy, or face any challenge, really.

Sometimes we need a little extra help.

I see these dietary "restrictions" as just that kind of help.  The proof is out there.  Just this week I read two articles:  the first article was how New Yorkers now ingest less trans fats because trans fats have been banned in restaurants and the second was that children in California are eating healthier in schools because the school menus have been revamped.  There is also plenty of evidence linked to calorie counts being posted on menus so people can see how much they are ingesting is helping people consume less.

These changes seem small, but the long term benefits are so HUGE.  Can we even imagine how obesity may be slowed because people don't have to drink a 44 ounce Big Gulp?  And if you really want that much soda, order two sodas.  It's not like they are banning Coke or Pepsi.  Even though it's not the worst idea on the planet. . .

Put Your Boobies In This!

I am chesty.  Sports bras have always been an issue for me- either too loose and I am smacking myself in the face, or so tight I can't even breathe!  There is chaffing, there is tube boob- boob issues, am I right ladies?

I was very excited when Under Armour Women asked me to try out their revolutionary new sports bra, the Armour Bra.  The bra is not one sized fits all or small, medium, and large.  It is sized like a regular bra for a custom fit.  I am a 34 DD, so I received a snazzy purple and black design, the colors for my size.  The bra has lightly padded shoulder straps, removable pads, and sturdy hooks in the back for an adjustable fit.

Yes, the bra is pretty.  Can it stand up to the jiggliest conditions?  I had to try it out in Zumba class, the one class where you only want to shake your ta ta's when you want them to shake.  I felt cool and comfortable the entire class AND there wasn't any wiggle unless I wanted it.  Since I received the bra, I have washed it three times and worn it for weight lifting and yoga class, and I have been completely happy.  Other bras I have used rub me the wrong way, but I haven't felt an ounce of chafe.

I HIGHLY recommend the Armour bra for any activity, not just for the high impact activities.  It's cool looking, comfortable, and reasonably priced for being far superior to other expensive bras I have tried.  It's a tits up winner!

Weight of the Nation

I just saw a little blurb on HBO for this new two part documentary about obesity in America.  It looks informative- and a little scary.  Anyone planning on watching?

It's just Schmidt!

The title has to be sung like Zooey Deschanel.

I have been watching the funny comedy New Girl instead of The Biggest Loser- because there is a more lovable loser on this show.  SCHMIDT!  He is douchey and hilarious.  And what if he made a work out video?  You know it would be about spinning.

Spring Cleansing!

Through intenSati I have met the fabulous Michele Pauker, wellness coach extrordinaire.  She is launching an assisted cleanse to get your body ready to shake it's winter coat and ready to see the sun!  This isn't a master cleanse or a water fast- this is a cleanse done right under the tutelage of a coach that knows what she is doing and can help you reach your full potential.

The cleanse is starting today- here are the deets!

Do you feel like you're ready for spring but your body is not?

Maybe you're feeling sluggish, heavy, and tired, rather than light and energetic. Maybe you feel dull, lackluster and moody. Or perhaps you feel like there is an extra layer dampening your sparkle.

The truth is, many of us are feeling that way right now. During winter we hibernate, eat lots of comfort foods, get less exercise and spend more time under the blankets on our couch.

Then spring arrives and we intend to clean out your bodies, our homes, or our lives and yet never quite find the time or just simply dread it.

What if we told you that getting a jumpstart on losing the winter weight, resetting your eating habits or de-cluttering your home or life doesn't have to be so hard?

Introducing...

The Ultimate 5-Day Urban Life Cleanse For Beginners!

Now, when you hear the word "cleanse" a lot of things might come into your mind - like starving yourself, or drinking scary weird juices or water with lemon and maple syrup all day.

Unlike those cleanses, in the Ultimate 5-Day Urban Life Cleanse For Beginners you'll be eating delicious, mouth-watering foods that are designed to nourish your body while giving it a rest from our winter habits like overloading on heavy comfort foods, indulging on too many sweets and moving our bodies less.

Please watch this!

I just saw this 90 minute movie called Hungry For Change that is all about living a life you love in a body you love right now.  Very Sati Life!

I was moved by how our bodies want to return themselves to a state of perfect health and happiness but are unable to because of the things that we put into our mouths and on our skin.  It made me think.  What am I doing to myself that is hurting me?  What am I doing to myself to show my body that it is a temple?

Watch it and tell me what you think!

It's Not Me, It's You: Why I am Breaking up With "The Biggest Loser"

I have been thinking about breaking up with The Biggest Loser since last season.  I have been blogging about the show since the beginning of my blog's life in 2009 and I thought it was a cornerstone of my blog.  The show drives a lot of traffic and I have made so many great friends and connections through the live tweeting every Tuesday night that I was having a hard time coming to this decision.

How did I choose to break up with something that has been such a big part of my week for the past 4 years?

The very first season of The Biggest Loser I didn't watch.  I watched it later in reruns, but I would not watch the show.  Why?  I was a former fat person and I thought that the show was going to trivialize the condition and make fun of the people participating.  I gave the show a chance in the second season, and I was hooked.  I found it inspiring and I dreamed of becoming a personal trainer like Bob or Jillian.  I longed to worked with people who wanted to make a change in their lives and I wanted to help them get there.

I watched every single season and was moved and excited to see the transformations.  Yes, the trivial game play also made the show more fun to watch, but overall the show produced people like Ali and Tara and Sam and Abby and Hannah- there are many others but you know I can't sit here and list names all day!- that made me excited to share the message of the show.

Then something changed.  The in show plugs got pluggier, the contestants got cattier, and the heart and soul of the show started to fade.  It turned into The Biggest Loser Inc., churning out season after season of people who have become faceless and nameless.  I think season 11 was the last season I enjoyed.  I have started to dread writing my weekly recaps, and although I love my Twitter friends, I have also started to dread watching the show.

I also don't like the products being hocked in the name of The Biggest Loser.  Weight loss pills and shakes, instant meals, body shapewear, and Subway sandwiches (Which are not a truly healthy option in my opinion. I mean, compared to other fast foods?  Maybe.) have become the main stars of the show.  The show is a money making machine, selling whey protein and scales and Jenni O Turkey to people who hope to get the same results as the people on the show.

Also, I think it is sad that so many contestants have reverted back to their old habits after the dust settles.  The real change didn't happen within.  It's sad to see that this express pass to happiness and wellness didn't really happen and now onto the next season two weeks later.

So, I have made a decision.  I will still live Tweet with my friends (for the rest of this season, anyway), but I am no longer going to write about the show.  It is filled with a negativity that I am trying to cleanse my life of and I no longer choose to participate in.  The show, in my opinion, has turned into what I feared in the beginning- a show that trivializes the obese and the journey it takes to get there.

Please read the recaps on @theblblog.  Jen spends a lot of time and energy writing about the show and she could use your love!  She has a great relationship with many former contestants and is fun to read.

So, The Biggest Loser.  It's not me, it's you.  Maybe we should start seeing other people?
